(WRB and weep screed is not required over some substrates.)
Sunset Stone – Adhered Concrete Masonry Veneer (ACMV) that complies with ICC-ES AC-51.
Masonry Sand – A washed and clean.
Cement - Type S or type N mortar or approved pre-mixed mortars.
Metal Lath – 2.5 or 3.4 galvanized diamond mesh or accepted substitute – as required by backing.
Weep Screed – corrosive resistant; see Part 2 of this instruction.
Water Resistive Barrier (WRB) – 2 layers grade D or allowed equivalent.
Backer Rod and Sealant
Surfaces must have surface integrity and be structurally sound to receive ACMV units.
Exterior Applications over wood or other surfaces not classified as a "water barrier"
shall have 2 layers of water resistive barrier. See Part 2 of these instructions.
Mortar: Type S or Type N should be a mix of 1 part of cement with 2.25 parts of masonry sand and
potable water. The same mix applies to the scratch coat, setting bed and the grout. Approved
masonry coloring may be added to grouting mortar.
THINGS TO KNOW:
The proper order of installation of Adhered Concrete Masonry Veneer is: all other crafts including
flatwork, flashing and weep screed, water resistive barrier and any required additional flashing, lath,
scratch coat, ACMV units, grout, backer rod and sealants.
Weep screed is required at the bottom of your WRB. It is needed to direct any water that enters
your Water Resistive Barrier away from the wall at the bottom of the WRB. See the MVMA
installation guide pages 8, 11 and various drawings for proper spacing and specific applications.
All ACMV must have a 2" minimum clearance above hard surfaces such as roofs, patios or pavement
and a 4" minimum clearance above organic material or "grade". See page 8 and various drawings in
the MVMA installation guide.
Two (2) layers of Water Resistive Barrier is required on all ACMV installations that require WRB.
These layers can be 2 layers of grade D paper or 15 pound felt, 1 layer of grade D or 15 pound felt
paper and 1 layer of approved house wrap, or a combination of other approved materials. See the
MVMA installation guide pages 5, 6 and "summary table" for allowable combinations.
Starting at the weep screed, the upper layers of the WRB must overlap (like shingles) the lower
layers by a minimum of 2" horizontally. The vertical layers of WRB must be lapped a minimum of 6".
If other crafts have not left you paper or flashing to lap under so you can integrate into their water
barrier system, have this corrected before proceeding. Your WRB is required to lap with all other
crafts that touch your installation. See page 10 and various drawings in the MVMA installation guide.
Staples/nails/screws attaching lath must penetrate 1" into framing member behind the
sheathing and 3/8" through metal studs or panels; see installation guide for fastener specifications.
Lath must lap a minimum of 1" vertically and horizontally and installed "cups up". See page 8 and 10
of the MVMA installation guide.
A scratch coat is required over the lath and should be nominally ½" thick and can be scored
horizontally when it is thumbprint dry. The back of each ACMV unit must be fully buttered with ½”
of mortar and rehydrate the scratch coat. Firmly work the ACMV onto the scratch coat and sliding it
slightly back and forth with a slight rotating motion to set the ACMV. See pages 1-12
in the MVMA
installation guide.
Leave a minimum of 3/8" void between the ACMV units and unlike material. This void should be
filled with backer rod and sealant. See the various drawings in the MVMA installation guide.
Seal ACMV installed in areas that are prone to ice dams, excessive water, salt, de‐icing agents,
chemicals, or in areas where efflorescence is present or the ACMV may be damaged.
Sunset Stone, Inc. does not recommend exterior "dry stacked" (installed without mortar joints)
installation of ACMV in geographical areas where freezing and thawing is common. Dry stacking
ACMV products in this type of environment can decrease its ability to stay adhered. A very tight
mortar joint raked deep is a more stable alternative in these areas.
